A bit about the Barnharts

Bruce and Karen Barnhart live in the Central Asian city of Almaty, Kazakhtan (Former Repuplic of the Soviet Union). We have lived here since January of 1996. We have two adorable children - Aliah Nicole and Danielle Marie. Althogh most of the kids' lives have been spent in Kaz. they were born in Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. After a brief time of letting Grandma(s) and Grandpa get to know their grandkids we were back off to the Kazakh Steppe.

Prior to our time here in Kazakhstan, Karen and I lived in two other rather unique parts of the world. In 1990, we moved to Shell, Ecuador and lived and worked there for 2 and 1/2 years. In 1994 we moved to a small city in Southern Russia called Krasnodar, where we spent 1 and 1/2 years studying the Russian language.

This past May 21 marked our 12th year of marital "blessedness". We were married in Karen's home town of Pearisburg, Virginia and lived in Winston Salem, North Carolina until our departure to Ecuador. Since 1988, we have resided in the States only 3 years, but we will never tire of calling the USA our home. This coming July (2000) we will come home for a short time to visit the main office of our organization in the Los Angeles area. But most of our time will be spent on the East Coast visiting family and friends in the mid-Atlantic States.

As with most couples with toddler age children - our hobbies take a back seat to slow walks in the park, reading the same kids books over and over and over again, and reciting our favorite lines from kids videos such as Veggie Tales or the Walt Disney Classics. When we are in the States with Grandma(s) and Grandpa then we like to slip back into the saddle again of flying small aircraft, riding bikes and playing basketball. In many respects, living overseas has been a "hobby" in itself. All the ingredients are there to almost make it a hobby - the thrill, the investment (time and $), the "stick-to-it-dness" and the resultant joy of all those things combined.
